A myth-maker and story-teller, noyona explores the unknown through a surrealist and absurdist approach, using a myriad of methods and mediums that include digital illustration, performance, print-making, installation, poetry, painting, short films, photography and draftsmanship. having graduated with distinction from the diploma of fine arts program at lasalle college of the arts, singapore and completed numerous short courses prior in portraiture, digital photography and digital illustration, NOYONA is currently studying in the ba (hons) fine arts program at nafa. sharing the values of punk and alternative local subcultures, NOYONA is influenced by provocative and anti-authoritarian art movements such as the dada-ists that allow for a bizarre and creative rebellion against conventional norms and practices. NOYONA is currently working on developing her personal symbolic language for her multi media thesis project.
my work stems from a chaos i cannot control. it is rooted in a psycho-spiritual framework of jungian psychology, alchemy and occult practices. my digital and oil paintings are an effort at dream building, and are an exploration of my personal symbolic language that express core themes such as transformation, death and rebirth. my creative process is a form of mediumship in which i channel unconscious psychic forces that give rise to surreal dreamscapes imbued with archetypal symbols. i use the process of ‘automatism’ founded by the surrealists as the principal technique to create my works. automatism is the allowing of creative output to be expressed spontaneously, giving rise to strange imagery that reveal the artist’s unconscious processes.my practice centers round ritualising different aspects of the Self by personifying each fragment and creating narratives for them; taking a surreal approach to showcase the fragmentation of identity; steeped in shadow and teasing the light.
